The archeological site
Trebeništa represents a necropolis from the iron age 7th-4th
century BC, as the things found there are made of iron. The people believe that
this necropolis has been used by the people of the ancient town of Lychnidos.
There are three localities Dry Fountain, Three Celjusti and Vrtuljka, located
1.5 km southern from the village of Trebeništa, and around 200 meters, north of
the Airport of Ohrid. On this locality was discovered a big number of graves.
The first archeological researches were made in 1918 and then with big stop
until 1972 when were discovered 56 grave construction, of which the first 13
belongs to a extremely rich people and the other to poor classes. By the
newest researches the people found that the graves are dating from the period of
7th-4th, maybe and 3rd
century BC. More graves were discovered by Bulgarians war operations in the
first world war. And again when, by the construction of the asphalt road

The researches were made in the period of 1930-1934 and later in 1953/1954.
There were discovered many valuable things such a golden mask which has been
used in theatre shows (on the picture), then iron earrings and plates. This
valuable things are kept in the Archeological Museum in Ohrid, Archeological
Museum Sophia and The Museum of Belgrade. There are four golden masks as the
shown, discovered, 2 are kept in the Museum in Sophia, while other two in
Belgrade. A very similar mask was discovered in 2002, by Pasco Kuzman, in the
Samoil Fortress in Ohrid. |
