Neguš (Greek name-Naoussa), Aegean
Macedonia. There are many reasons for the start of the Neguš Uprising in Aegean
Macedonia in the year of 1822. But the main reason is the terror spread on the
Orthodox population of Neguš (Macedonians, Vlachs and Greeks) by the Ottoman
Turks and the Albanian gangs of Ali Pasha of Ioannina. That was the major reason why the Macedonians
were
joined by Vlachs and Greeks on March 3rd 1822, and together, attacked the city of
Neguš. At
least army of 5,000 uprisers leaded by Atanas Karatašo - Stariot, Angel Gaco
and Zafirakis Logotet, immediately attacked the Ottoman stations this city
(army, post, telegraph). Soon they organized their authority of the uprisers in
the city. After their settlement in Neguš, several well trained dukes, went in
other cities, like: Ber (Veria), Pazar (Ioanitsa), Lerin (Florina), Kozani
to organize uprisings there, which was successfully done and the uprising
expanded on a larger territory.
The up
risers went to attack the city of Ber (Veria), but they didn't know that an
Ottoman army already came there and settled in order brutally to end the
uprising. They failed to enter in the city. After this attempt in Ber, the Ottoman major-general
Lobud - Paša sent an army of 20,000 Turkish soldiers
the put an end of the uprising. In several occasions the 20,000 Turkish army
failed to put an end of the Neguš uprising. But it reached it's end at the beginning of April 1822.
The Ottoman Turks were helped by a local surrender, who was paid to tell them
information about the uprising (it's
leader, their settlement) and these surrenders opened the gates of the city,
Neguš. Soon the Ottoman army entered and brutally ended the dream for liberty
of several thousands people. They were marching for 5 days in the city, killing, stealing
everything what would came on their way. All the men between 15 and 65 years
were killed, around 1,300. Around 30 Neguš Women in order to save them selves from the
Ottomans jumped in the waterfalls of river Arapica. |
